About Rally-O

The decline in the number of competitors in the Obedience trials prompted Charles (Bud) L. Kramer to develop the new sport of Rally Obedience. Rally–0 emphasizes FUN and EXCITEMENT for the dog , handler and spectators by providing a more natural approach to the performance. This new sport is intended to promote positive relationships between the dog and handler based on trust and respect.

Rally encourages all dogs to participate. The ATTITUDE in Rally is more important than precision. Dog and handlers "Just Gotta Have Fun" Rally-0 uses directional signs to run through a numbered course within an allotted time. Rally-0 is for those that desire an effortless activity that is fun and games.

Rally is designed so that dogs at all levels of training may participate. A beginners course could include heel, sits aided by handler, turns, change of pace, sit stay and elements of the recall. As the dogs gain skill levels, more difficult courses are designed which will improve you and your dogs performance and confidence levels.

Rally goes beyond the basic heeling by adding in over 40 obedience movement with the sits, down, and paces of traditional heeling. It also requires a brisk pace, positive, attitude and a happy demeanor. It challenges you and your dog in a partnership that improves heeling and teamwork.

This ability to work as a team in this way during a Rally Style Obedience performance, greatly adds to the handlers ability to keep the dog’s attention and attitude at a high level. The handlers are allowed to talk , praise ,encourage, clap their hands , pat their leg or any verbal means of encouragement but are not allowed to touch their dog or make physical corrections. The performance of the dog and handler in the ring need not be precise but the dog must show a willingness and enjoyment while it is working.

Rally is a non-regular class in AKC for purebred dogs only . There is an Association of Rally Obedience that offers trials for all dogs.
